Desktops Buying Guide

Desktop PCs hold their own thanks to their price-tag, performance and power, the range of options available and the ease with which they can be upgraded. Our desktop computer guide outlines the main points to consider prior to purchase.

What Is The Processor?

As the core or "brains" of the desktop computer, the processor — also known as the Central Processing Unit (CPU) – makes your PC run and determines the speed at which it executes tasks.

  • Most modern desktop computers feature two- or even four-core processing units — it's like having more than one brain — so they can handle several tasks at once.
  • Multi-core processors also run cooler and quieter, and consume less power.

Random Access Memory (RAM) Explained

The more RAM you have, the faster programs and applications will run. Very basic desktops include a minimum of 1GB RAM. The more programs you intend to run, the greater RAM you'll require.

The Hard Drive (HDD) Is Important

The bigger the hard drive capacity, the more files (such as music and photos) your desktop can store. Entry-level desktops feature at least a 160GB hard drive.

Sizing Up The Monitor

Today's desktops commonly come with an LCD monitor, starting from about 18.5-inch in size and upwards.

Optical Drives Offer Versatility

Most desktops have DVD burners. Ensure yours is multi-format to manage both +R/RW and – R/RW. Blu-ray drives, while expensive, are ideal for home theatre buffs.

Stay Connected

Now that many households have MP3 players and digital cameras, it's vital that your desktop features a minimum of four USB ports and at least one FireWire port. If your desktop doesn't include the latter, a FireWire expansion card can be installed.

Get Hands-On With The Keyboard And Mouse

Wired or wireless? Many users have no issue using a wired keyboard and mouse, but those who feel that wires get in the way, or those with a home theatre PC (although they will typically use a remote control), may opt for wireless devices. Individuals who frequently use their desktop might consider an ergonomic keyboard. There's an extensive range to choose from, with features such as split-key or wave designs, wrist and thumb supports, and illuminated keys.

Stay In Touch With A Webcam

This is a must-have if you'd like to communicate face-to-face with family or friends who may be overseas or interstate. Using the right software, you can also take still photos and create video emails, or engage in a virtual meeting. The webcam's DPI or resolution determines the quality of images and, generally, the higher the DPI the better.

Should I Consider Speakers?

For a simple sound solution, a set of low-cost stereo speakers will suffice. Those requiring quality audio should consider a 2.1 system, consisting of two satellite speakers plus a subwoofer. Gamers and home-theatre buffs will appreciate a 5.1 system for a surround sound experience.

Don't Forget To Choose A Printer

There are two main types of printers: inkjet and laserjet. The prime differences come down to speed and colour. Versatile and affordable, inkjet printers are, generally speaking, the slower option, however, they provide colour for photographs. Laserjets offer quality resolution and crisp, fast, black print, making them the ideal choice for text documents. Multifunction — or all-in-one — printers provide further capabilities such as scanning, faxing and copying, and these combine with either inkjet or laserjet printers. When buying a desktop "package", a printer — or all-in-one — is commonly included in the bundle.

Match Your Lifestyle

The Basic All-Rounder

General users should look for a good value, versatile desktop that caters to the needs of the whole family.

  • 2GHz processor
  • 1GB to 2GB RAM
  • 160GB to 320GB HDD
  • DVD burner
  • 18.5-inch screen

The Movie Star

Home theatre buffs need a desktop with power and memory – and don't forget the extras!

  • 2GHz+ dual-core CPU
  • 2GB+ RAM
  • 500GB+ HDD
  • Blu-ray, HD DVD or combo optical drive
  • HDMI port – this allows connection between desktop and compatible HDTV.
  • Plus: ATI or Nvidia graphics card, TV tuner card, sound card and Media management software.

The Gaming Guru

Die-hard 3D gamers require a desktop featuring a powerful processor plus sufficient memory and storage space, as well as graphics cards.

  • 2GHz to 3GHz+ dual-core or even quad-core CPU
  • 4GB+ RAM
  • 500GB HDD
  • Blu-ray ROM/DVD burner combo
  • 22-inch+ screen
  • Plus: Sound cards and dedicated ATI or Nvidia graphics cards, gaming keyboard and mouse.

Simple Desktop Choices

Brains: It's vital to select a processor with enough power to run your everyday programs with ease. The greater the gigahertz (GHz), the better your desktop will perform.
Grunt: It's essential that you have more than the minimum requirement of Random Access Memory (RAM) for the software and operating system you'll be running on your desktop.
Storage: This is all about speed and capacity. A larger hard drive equates to better performance and the higher the number of gigabytes (GB), the larger the drive.
