  • Buying Guide: Camera Lens

Camera lenses play a pivotal role in image capture to the extent that an average camera with a good lens will take better photos than a high-end camera with a mediocre lens.

nikon nikkor af-s dx 55-200mm f4-56g ed vr lens is rated 4.338983050847458 out of 5 by 118.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from you get what you pay for i got this lens for my nikon d5100 at the start of the year and i am very happy with it!!! i am rating it 4 star becuase the AF is not always good. but for what you pay it is a great lens to start out!! but if your not starting out (buying a d7100 UP or updateing) i would get a better one. like the 70-300 af-s or a nikon. but you will pay more then 2 times the price for that so yeah! but it is always better to have a good lens, if you have a dslr and it is working (useable) then update your lens first then the camera. but this is a great lens for the money so go to harvery and try it out :) and see if its what you want. hope this helped :) Trey..

Rated 3 out of 5 by from right quality for price, but that's it. I am one of those who cannot get a perfect focus at 200mm. All photos are soft or hazy when examined on a pixel level, even when tripod mounted. Most casual photographers will not notice this, but I am very particular. I found it to operate smoothly and was quick enough to focus for all but a few extreme cases on fast moving subjects. The VR has no effect, as far as I can tell. I get the same results with it on or off. I would recommend it for a casual "vacation pictures" photographer, but this is not the lens you want for serious sports or landscape stuff. It's relatively light weight make it decent for carrying around for long days.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No better lens for the money (Part 2) This lens is often sold as a kit combo together with the 18-55mm. I think they are the two best lenses for the money you will ever buy. For under these two lenses do 90% of what you can do with the 24-70mm f/2.8 and the 70-200mm VR f/2.8 (both of which I own and love) AT 1/10th the price (and a combined 19oz vs. a combined 84oz)!!! Unless you are doing professional-type photography (i.e., sports, birds, low light, etc.), this will do almost everything an amateur could hope for. A lot of people turn up their nose at this lens because it is so inexpensive, instead buying a much more expensive one that they do not need or fully use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for close up work Using this lens on the D3100 it is surprisingly much more enjoyable to use as compared with the standard 18 to 55mm lens the body comes with. It is a great lens for closeups of just about anything, like flowers for example, as you don't need to get physically close. A word on sharpness though. The VR really works but if you need a hyper detailed picture, say one showing every bit of pollen on a flower, then do it the old fashion way and disable the VR and either use a tripod or hold it rock steady. The difference is subtle but it IS there. Physically the lens is a bit larger than the stocker, but sits easy in the palm of your hand. Well worth the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from definitely worth it I purchased this lens in addition to the D5000 kit (which included the 18-55mm VR lens), & am so happy I did. This lens is essential when shooting kids playing, school events, concerts, distant scenery, etc. I have been very pleased; images have been clear with no blur. If you are looking at jumping into the DSLR world, do your self a favor & get this lens from the beginning. If you don't, you will soon wish you had, as the 18-55 lens is a good lens, but doesn't have the zoom you will need for most everyday photos (unless you shoot in close range exclusively). This lens is almost always the one I leave on my camera!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product has great features and easy to use Photo quality is excellent for the money. It is a great portrait lens as well as a great telephoto lens for close sports action such as boxing, skating, gymnast, etc. I would recommend this lens to the serious hobbyist as well as the professional. I am an oil paint portrait artist and use the lens to set up my compositions as well as lighting effects. Now days people do not have the time to sit and pose, so I work it all out in the camera first, then through my photo software do any extra tweaking necessary and work from the print. I can then paint when I want to, such as 2 AM.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Wonderful Complementary Lens When I purchased my new D3300 camera with 18-55mm VR II kit lens, the photo opportunities were immediately rewarding. However, in some situations I desired more than the available 55mm maximum focal length of the kit lens. The Nikon 55-200 VR lens has become a perfect complement. It matches my "normal" zoom lens in both image quality and ease of use, yet gives up to 3.5 times more reach. It is compact enough to fit in the same carrying case with the D3300 body and the original zoom lens, without the bulk and weight of older lenses owned in the past. I highly recommend it!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Looks can be deceiving I purchased this lens with a D40 around 3-4 years ago. I purchased this set up because of the positive reviews it had received as being a good value and a quality product. It was a replacement to a point and shoot digital camera with a long lag time. The 55-200mm lens has never been up to snuff in my opinion, say with low light focus, or the speed of focus. By the time the lens had focused my child’s sports moment had passed. Now the lens will not focus at all in auto mode, and it appears that is because the lens’s aperture is broken. I would not buy this lens again
