In my experience, finding a vacuum that meets everyone’s unique cleaning needs can often be a challenge.
Thankfully, with all the best in German innovation, it appears that Miele have developed a cordless vacuum cleaner that can truly be all things to all people. The Miele Triflex HX1 Pro Stick Vacuum promises to deliver suction power that rivals any corded vacuum, as well as extensive battery life and a range of flexible modes that let you effortlessly adapt the machine to whatever cleaning task you have at hand.
A self-confessed “clean freak” who’s long been on the lookout for the best stick vacuum cleaner, my colleague Tori was just as intrigued as I was to learn how the new Miele stick vacuum stacked up against these bold claims. So, she brought a brand-new model home from Harvey Norman and took it for a spin to see how it performed for this Miele Triflex HX1 review.
Impressive Power of the Miele Triflex HX1 Pro Stick Vacuum
For many conventional vacuum users who are hesitant to switch to a portable stick vacuum, a key question is whether a cordless vacuum can provide the kind of suction they need to deal with the more difficult dust and debris that haunts their carpets and other surfaces.
Likewise, Miele themselves were cautious about entering the cordless vacuum market. The Miele Triflex HX1 is the company’s first stick vacuum cleaner, and they didn’t release it until they were sure they could provide the reliable power customers have come to expect from them.
With state-of-the-art Vortex technology and an innovative electrobrush, the new Miele stick vacuum offers extreme suction, every bit as strong as the most powerful Miele corded vacuum series.* If you know anything about how powerful Miele’s conventional vacuum cleaner range has gotten, you’ll know this is an impressive claim.
Most important of all for our Miele vacuum reviewer Tori, she had heard the Triflex HX1 Pro Stick Vacuum would have the power to pick up the seemingly immovable cat hair that inhabited her carpets.
“As an owner of two ragdoll cats, there is always hair on my carpet no matter how often I vacuum.”
The Miele Triflex HX1 Pro Stick Vacuum passed this test for Tori with flying colours, with the impressive output of the engine and the sophisticated electrobrush making short work of the cat hair along with fine dust and heavy soiling that usually resisted Tori’s best cleaning efforts. “It was great!” she said, “The suction power and quality is fantastic. I was very impressed with how much the Miele Triflex HX1 sucked up and how clean it left my carpet.”
The Miele Triflex HX1 is really 3 vacuums in 1!
A major calling card of the new Miele vacuum cleaner is its uniquely flexible, three-in-one design. Repositioning the Miele Triflex HX1 Pro Stick Vacuum’s high-capacity power unit allows you to quickly convert the vacuum between three distinct modes suited to different cleaning tasks: Comfort mode, Reach mode and Compact mode.
Miele Triflex HX1 Comfort Mode
In Comfort mode, the power unit is located at base of the vacuum, near the cleaning head. Shifting the centre of gravity closer to the ground makes the Miele Triflex HX1 Pro Stick Vacuum light in the hand and easy to manoeuvre. This setting is ideal for cleaning larger surface areas, ensuring you can go for longer without feeling tired or uncomfortable. In this mode, the Triflex HX1 will also stand upright on its own, taking all the hassle out of pausing and restarting while you clean.
Miele Triflex HX1 Reach Mode
When the power unit is positioned at the top of the machine, alongside the handle, the Miele Triflex HX1 Pro Stick Vacuum is in Reach mode. This configuration allows you to easily clean under beds, lounges and cupboards, to the corners of ceilings and other tricky places that can sometimes be tempting to ignore.
Miele Triflex HX1 Compact Mode
In Compact mode, the Miele Triflex HX1’s power unit can be directly attached to a range of cleaning heads without the suction tube. This is perfect for cleaning inside lounges, cars and other jobs that call for maximum manoeuvrability. It’s also incredibly quick and easy to setup, making on-the-fly cleaning tasks a total breeze.
Our Miele Triflex HX1 reviewer Tori found it surprisingly easy and intuitive to switch between the modes. “At first I was a little sceptical,” she admitted, “but once I got going and saw how simple it was I could really see how helpful this feature would be. It’s like you’ve got three different vacuums, one for each kind of job you have to do.”
Tori found that the combination of suction power and portability made cleaning up her car in Compact mode easier than she could have imagined. Overall, the verdict was very positive: “I loved that the one vacuum could clean my whole apartment and my car with ease.”
The Miele Triflex HX1’s Battery Goes The Distance
All that power and flexibility would be nothing without the battery to back it up. Tori shared my frustrations with previous cordless vacuum cleaners that lacked the staying power for longer jobs. “When you have to stop what you’re doing, hook the vacuum up to charge, wait and start again later it feels like one chore turns into four.”
The designers of the new Miele stick vacuum took great pains to avoid the typical pitfalls of cordless cleaners. A cutting-edge VARTA Li-Ion battery with seven high-performance cells allows the Miele Triflex HX1 Pro Stick Vacuum to deliver up to 60 minutes of cleaning per charge.^ When I asked Tori for her impressions of the Triflex’s runtime, she told me: “I managed to do my whole apartment and my car before I had to recharge the battery. I was very impressed.”
For Tori, one charge of the VARTA Li-Ion was more than enough. But, for people with larger homes to clean, the Miele Triflex HX1 Pro includes not just an extra battery but also an additional charging station. This means you can charge two batteries simultaneously and continue to charge one battery while you clean, so you truly never have to worry about being caught out.
The Miele Vacuum’s XXL Floorhead
The key to a cordless vacuum cleaner that makes it the distance is not just a quality battery but fast, efficient performance. The new Miele vacuum cleaner’s secret weapon in this regard is its XXL floorhead.
The unique, extra-wide electrobrush means you can cover more ground faster with the Miele Triflex HX1 Pro Stick Vacuum, while still giving every inch of floorspace an equally thorough clean. It also adapts automatically to different surfaces, saving you the time and hassle of switching between different attachments.
All in all, when I asked Tori how the Miele Triflex HX1 Pro Stick Vacuum stacked up against other cordless models she had tried in the past, the results were conclusive: “From usability to power and looks, I honestly have to say that in my opinion, this is the best stick vacuum cleaner I’ve ever used.”
