microsoft surface book with performance base i7 512gb tablet is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great portable laptop/tablet I've owned the surface pro and wasn't in love with it. I was a little unsure how much I'd like the surface book but am happy to say I love it. Keyboard feels fantastic, not just for a portable device, it's just a great keyboard period. Touchpad is beautiful. Screen/display brilliant. Battery life fantastic. The snappiness of the system is good and I haven't experienced the driver issues I had with the surface pro. Installing windows updates does take quiet a lot of time, but they go through successfully. All in all a great device.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from After 1 year of ownership - Avoid! Microsoft recently sent emails to surface users asking them to provide their experience with the Surface product. I don't usually do reviews but since I typed it up for the feedback I figured I'd post this to try help someone avoid the same issues I've had. If you don't feel like reading, the summary is: This is touted as a professional level device capable of handling intensive tasks, it is an overpriced toy with significant design flaws and very poor after sale support. Definitely not the right device for people seriously involved in the creative community. For reference I am a Senior Product Development Engineer and purchased the laptop for work while travelling. I have the I7, 16b Ram, 512gb with discreet Nvidia GPU When asked by Microsoft to explain any negative experiences I have had with the device, my reply was: The device wholly under-performed and did not meet expectations. The computer struggles with menial tasks, by struggles I mean it heats up, the fans spool up and it runs super hot for stupid tasks like web browsing. (yes I checked all running programs and tried to optimise CPU control etc) In simple CAD modelling it would almost immediately get up to 100°c CPU temps and begin throttling, this cannot be good for components around the CPU, SSD storage and Lithium batteries are all proven to degrade much faster when exposed to elevated temperatures. I tried editing some 1080P 60FPS footage once using Davinci resolve, that was a total waste of time, it couldn't keep up, the video was choppy and completely uneditable... system processes using large amounts of CPU constantly.. increasing the CPU load on top of my normal tasks resulting in 100°c temperatures frequently. Extended searching for a solution to the problem turned up lots of cases with the same issues but no reliable fixes... The screen hinge/connection!!! with the laptop on my lap, the screen would regularly disconnect and reconnect if the laptop even slightly moved, sometimes causing lockups if the program was using the GPU in the keyboard.. Sleep of death, this again is a widely reported issue that seems to have been completely ignored. lately it is a given that if I have been using the PC and I've closed it and let it go to sleep, the screen will not wake when opened, the keyboard illuminates when touched but no response can be had from the screen. A hard reboot is the only solution. I had a period where the computer simply refused to turn on at all, right when I needed to get an urgent work assignment out... I was actually glad I would have a valid reason to return the product and get a refund. Unfortunately, it came right after a couple of days. The on off button!!!! this is supposed to be a mobile product, I assume the designers considered that the laptop would be carried in a bag to protect it during travels? Why is the On/Off button on the outside and proud of the unit? Hot bag syndrome is another widely reported issue with these machines that has been totally ignored. I had to go to the extent of making a special clip to place over the laptop edge when closed that covered the On/Off button after several hot bag incidents where I would arrive at my destination to find my battery almost completely empty and the laptop itself actually too hot to touch!!! again this cannot be good for the electronics within the machine. The on off button is software linked so why has an update not provided an option to disable the button if the laptop is closed!? the code would be incredibly simple, if the button is pressed, check to see if the laptop is open or closed, and if closed do nothing... I realise that it would have to be an option because some users have the closed laptop on their desk connected to external monitors and like to be able to turn the machine on without opening the laptop. BUT it should be an option. As you can see I am extremely disappointed in this product. I don't make a significant amount of money so to waste full retail price on this device is unacceptable. I then had to purchase another machine to do what this could not, so now the surface sits under my desk most of the time and is relegated to ordering groceries and other simple tasks that it can hopefully handle.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Beautiful laptop, poor user experience Touch screen is great as is the surface pen. Keyboard is great to type on. Trackpad is... meh. The user experience on the other hand is buggy. Screen dropping in and out, things taking ages to load... Honestly, for this money, buy a MacBook Pro. The interaction between touchscreen/tablet and laptops isn't quite there yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great build, both hardware and software Bought the Surface Book recently, and I use it for programming and light data analysis. Thus far has handled everything I've thrown at it, with the added benefit of being a portable tablet for meetings and after work on the couch. Seems like the software/firmware issues have been sorted out. Highly recommended

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use and very portable I have had this laptop for about a month now and couldn't be happier. It was a perfect choice to use for uni each day as the battery lasts all day without a recharge and is light and portable. It was very easy to set up out of the box, and we have not had any problems with it.
