Making Waves
Montana’s journey into swimming began following a life changing injury that led her away from contact sport and into the pool, where she discovered both her passion and her future. What started as recovery quickly became something more.
“Swimming has given me resilience, determination, and happiness,” she has shared, reflecting on the role the sport has played in shaping her path.
Her rapid rise has seen her set state records and consistently perform against some of Australia’s best para swimmers, establishing herself as one to watch.
Taking the Next Step
In 2026, Montana reached two major milestones in her career, earning her official Australian Para swim Dolphin Number and being selected for her first Australian team at the Para Pan Pacific Championships.
These championships are a key international event, bringing together top para swimmers from across the globe and providing valuable experience ahead of future Paralympic campaigns.
“My goals for this year are to compete at the trials and race at Para Pan Pacs,” Montana said, highlighting her focus and determination as she steps onto the world stage.
Rising Through the Ranks
Montana’s achievements reflect her dedication and drive. From national medals to recognition as one of Australia’s most promising emerging athletes, she continues to build momentum with every race.
Her progression into the national system signals the beginning of something even bigger as she continues to learn, grow and compete among the country’s best.
Beyond the Pool
Outside of competition, Montana is passionate about inspiring others and giving back to the community. Her journey is grounded in authenticity and belief.
“My best quote that I’ve ever heard is just be yourself. Don’t let anyone change you,” she says, a message she hopes resonates with younger athletes following their own path.
She is also quick to recognise those who have supported her along the way.
“My biggest supporter has always been my mum. She’s been there for every meet and supported me through all the good and hard times.”
Looking Ahead
With international competition now on the horizon, Montana is focused on continuing her growth toward the ultimate goal of Paralympic selection.
“I just want to keep training as hard as I can and be ready to make the team when the time comes,” she said when reflecting on her long-term ambitions.
Supported by Harvey Norman, Montana Atkinson represents the future of Australian Para swimming. Her journey is just getting started, and she is ready to take on the world.
