With its lofty status as the #1 toothbrush recommended by dental professionals worldwide — and a very first foray into the forum of electric toothbrushes for yours truly — the pressure to perform was well and truly on the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 Connected Electric Toothbrush from Harvey Norman.
It didn’t disappoint – in my humble opinion.
Being a traditionalist with a lifetime’s experience of manual brushing only, it took me a while to get my head – and mouth – around the concept of an electric toothbrush. What I didn’t expect was that in practicality there was absolutely nothing to fear – the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 Connected Electric Toothbrush guided me through every step of the way. This user-friendly tool for your teeth can very much be described as “dental care for dummies”.
Take Your Dental Health Regime To The Next Level
What the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 Connected Electric Toothbrush promises — and ultimately delivers in spades — over a manual brush is a truly holistic and adaptive oral health experience. I didn’t feel like I was just cleaning my teeth; I was also cleaning my gums — making for a mouth that feels fresh and healthy. All toothbrushes claim the end-result of a brighter, whiter smile. I know for a fact that this connected Sonicare delivers all that – and the rest.

It’s instinctively easy to set-up, plug in and use. In a matter of minutes, I was ready to go. Even before perusing the instruction manual, it felt like a tool I could incorporate into my everyday routine with minimum fuss.
The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 Handle
Stylish, slim and simple to use, the ergonomically-designed smart Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 Connected Electric Toothbrush handle is worthy of display on the bathroom basin – its silhouette is most certainly easy on the eye. Where manual toothbrushes look cheap and nasty, especially after a few uses, this looks a million bucks – but without such a price tag. Appearance aside, the beautifully textured, perfectly weighted grip felt immediately comfortable and familiar in my hand.
The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 Brush Heads
The boffins at the Philips laboratory paired the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 Connected Electric Toothbrush with a couple of easy click-on brush heads.
The C3 Premium Plaque Control brush head sports soft, flexible sides and bristles designed to curve around the contours of your teeth. In theory — and indeed in practice, as I soon discovered — this allows more surface contact and more plaque removal from hard-to-reach spots, all the while being gentle on gums. For the sensitive among us (and I’ve gone through phases where my gums were giving me grief), that’s a welcomed user-friendly feature.
Also included was the W3 Premium White brush head, which features densely-packed bristles especially designed to take on the everyday surface stains that can be caused by the food and drinks we all love.
The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 Settings
What’s on offer is a truly personalised brushing experience with four modes (Clean; Deep Clean+; Gum Health; and White+) and three intensities (High; Medium; and Low) to address different brushing requirements. These customisable combinations give the option between a higher setting to turbocharge your tooth-clean and a lower one for more-sensitive mouths. The choice was mine. I was to dictate my dental demands from now on. With the Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 Connected Electric Toothbrush, you can take control too.
With setting combinations that range from gentle, soft or somewhere in between, I found my personal results truly positive. Through “seat-of-the-pants” testing after just one week, my teeth felt cleaner, my gums stronger, and my breath fresher.
The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 Technology
To automatically select the right mode and intensity for the best possible clean, the Sonicare DiamondClean 9000’s BrushSync technology uses smart brush head recognition. The BrushPacer feature indicates when it’s time to move onto the next section — it does so with a subtle change in vibration. I found it was certainly perceptible, but it wasn’t intrusive by any means.
In addition, its in-built pressure sensor lets you know if you’re brushing too hard — and need to take it easy on your teeth and gums — by making a pulsing sound. Think of it as a heads-up to let the brush head do the dirty work. This was a handy feature, especially for the first few brushes as I acclimatised to the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 Connected Electric Toothbrush’s cleaning capabilities.
And if that isn’t impressive — and helpful enough — this sonic electric toothbrush tracks how long you’ve been using a particular brush head for. When it’s time to replace it, the handle’s replacement reminder icon lights up and is accompanied by a short beep as notification.
I can confidently recommend the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 Connected Electric Toothbrush for techies and Luddites, young and old alike. And surely that’s an endorsement worth considering, coming from a “late adopter” like me.
The Philips Sonicare App
The clever connectivity of the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 Connected Electric Toothbrush’s handle boasts Android and iOS compatibility, as well as Bluetooth wireless technology. By downloading and connecting your brushing experience to the Sonicare app — which generates a personalised Progress Report — it makes for convenient monitoring of your brushing behaviour.
The Sonicare app provides information on your brush time, frequency and notifies you if you’re applying too much pressure. In addition to monitoring and storing data on the aforementioned, it will also give you brush head reminders so you can keep on track of when it’s time for a new brush head.
The Charging Power of the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9000
Philips’ rechargeable toothbrush can last for up to two weeks on a single charge, even with regular use. Choose to power up using either the charger base (by placing the charging glass on the base and the toothbrush handle in the glass) or the USB travel case (which means the Sonicare goes anywhere). When the handle is fully charged, the battery indicator light is illuminated in white. I can’t imagine many situations where I’d get caught out. It’s been just less than a fortnight with the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9000 Connected Electric Toothbrush and I still haven’t had to recharge…
