First Impressions of The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect heater, fan and purifier

Over the past year, I’ve been using two devices to keep things cool and fresh in the house – an air purifier and a desk fan. This isn’t ideal due to the space that two appliances take up. But it’s the exact reason why The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect grabbed my attention from the get-go.

Featuring 3-in-1 multi-function technology that warms in winter, cools in summer and purifies all year round thanks to a 3-stage HEPA air purifier, The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect seemed perfect. With the ability to oscillate from 60° up to nearly a full 360°, it promised to create a comfortable controlled temperature, with purified air sent to every corner of the room. I was very keen to set it up!

Taking The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect out of its surprisingly compact box, I was struck by how great it looked on my desk and how well designed it was. It’s no doubt engineered to last!

Setting the product up was also completely seamless.

Control of The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect heater, fan and purifier was easy with simple touch controls that need only a light tap to activate. The touch controls are handily located on top of the device.

The lighting around the fan ring indicates when the device is in cooling or heating mode. There’s also an included remote control which cleverly stores at the back of the Breville air purifier heater magnetically!

Breville SensAir System

The sleek black LCD display on the front is known as the SensAir System. SensAir shows the temperature of the room, as well as the Air Quality Index as measured by PM2.5 levels.

A four-colour indicator gives you a nice, simple indication of how clean the air in the room is. At a glance I was able to see if things were blue for ‘very good’ or purple for ‘good’. Alternatively, the indicator could also show orange for ‘fair’ or red for ‘poor’.

What are PM2.5 Levels?

Curious, I began to look into PM2.5 levels. What are PM2.5 levels, and why had Breville chosen to measure this rather than pollen or dust levels?

It turns out PM2.5 are extremely fine particles that hang in the air. They take their name from being 2.5 microns in size or smaller and can be seen only with a microscope. PM2.5 particles, which in Australia usually come from vehicle exhausts, bushfire smoke, coal-fired power plants and heavy industry, are so small that if inhaled they can get directly into your bloodstream. Prolonged exposure is thought to lead to reduced lung function and even respiratory or cardiovascular diseases.¹ More than a mere 100 micrograms of these in a cubic metre of air is usually considered ‘very poor’ air quality,² which is when that SensAir display will turn an ominous red.

Of the common pollutants lurking in our air, PM2.5 are some of the most harmful. It makes a lot of sense to keep on top of these levels. And that makes Breville’s SensAir display all the more useful.

The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect delivers cleaner air all year round

Thankfully, The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect heater, fan and purifier is well-equipped to deliver cleaner air. This is a result of it featuring a pre-filter, a true HEPA filter and a carbon filter.

A Real World Air Purification Test

On cue, The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect’s purification ability was put to the test. A tough, real-world challenge had appeared and demonstrated why an air purifier is a great investment.

A series of hazard reduction burns were in full swing on the outskirts of Sydney during April’s final days. This was just as I had kicked off my Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect review. These burns had led to an ‘extremely poor’ air quality rating. The region I live in was the hardest hit. It was incredible how quickly the air inside became polluted with the backburning smoke.

This thick hazard reduction plume would waft over to choke my area only a few hours later.

Even with doors and windows closed, the SensAir display quickly reached an alarming red PM2.5 reading of over 120. This was well beyond the 100 considered ‘very poor’.

Impressively, The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect heater, fan and purifier removed smoke particles clean out of the air. And in a very speedy manner. After only a few minutes everything was back to a reassuring blue 4. Even on the worst day with an acrid, throat-irritating haze seemingly creeping into the house from every slight crevice, this powerful Breville 3-in-1 purifier didn’t fail to keep things in that safe blue zone.

That tell-tale bushfire smell was pungent in every room except where I’d put The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect. It proved that the anti-odour activated carbon layer had done its job well.

Having shown it can defeat bushfire smoke with ease, I was already convinced. In my opinion, this is one of the best air purifiers in Australia.

Keep Your Cool – Or Your Warm with The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect

The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect heater, fan and purifier definitely promises to be a comfort all-rounder, all year round.

With the chill of winter fast approaching as I commenced The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect review, I was impressed with how fast it was able to heat a room. Featuring a powerful 2200W heating element and the ability to oscillate nearly a full 360°, The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect was able to circulate warmth quickly and easily around the room. In heating mode, you can even choose a desired room temperature and this purifier fan heater will automatically shut off when the temperature has been reached.

Red ring at night = Winter delight!

Equally, The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect was very good at keeping things cool during the day. While it’s not an air-conditioner, on a balmy afternoon I had no problem staying cool with the fan on medium speed. Even in summer I could imagine the high setting being enough to keep me from firing up the air-con on all but the most sweltering days.

The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect heater, fan and purifier didn’t stop being useful after bedtime. Clean air and cooler temperatures are key ingredients for a good night’s sleep – and this Breville fan is well-suited to the night shift. It features a very quiet brushless motor and will automatically switch off the ambient light and display once you turn off the lights. The pleasant white noise helped me drift off very quickly, and the clean air meant I wasn’t waking up sneezing.

Bringing The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect into a Smart Home

The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect can be happily integrated into your smart home. With its Wi-Fi connectivity, the machine can be effortlessly monitored and controlled from wherever you are. As long as you have a data connection, of course.

A phone with the Breville Home Connect app open, placed next to The Breville Air Rounder Plus Connect.

Once all set up with the Breville Home Connect app, it was pretty amazing to control this smart fan in real time from the office over 45 kilometres away. But lazy me found the best use for the app was actually while I was less than two metres from The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect. No longer would I have to fetch the remote or use the buttons on this smart air purifier (the horror!). Instead, I could simply use my phone located right next to me if I wanted a change in temperature. Wonderful!

The ability to track both the level of PM2.5 pollution outside and the local weather proved to be very useful. It meant I could set The Air Rounder Plus™ Connect to work as needed, even whilst at the office.

The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect Automation

Where I was really impressed with The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect, was in the Automation features. I could set The Air Rounder Plus™ Connect to heat or cool the room on a schedule or if certain conditions are met. So, if my space started to feel cold at below 20°C, I could set the innovative appliance to run in heating mode for the ideal temperature.

I chose to set The Breville Air Rounder Plus™ Connect to start warming the room before my alarm. This way, I could wake up to a nice toasty bedroom.
