A decade ago, Dyson presented the world with the first Dyson bladeless fan. It was at once both innovative and a huge success.
10 years on, they’ve again revolutionised the game by releasing the first Dyson personal air purifier: the Dyson Pure Cool Me™ personal purifying fan.
Having recently become a proud owner of the Dyson V11™ Absolute Vacuum Cleaner (after reading my friend Christie’s Dyson V11 review), I’ve been itching to test out more Dyson appliances. With the launch of the Dyson Pure Cool Me™ personal purifying fan at Harvey Norman, I knew I’d found the perfect candidate.
To see how it performed, read on for my Dyson Pure Cool Me™ personal purifying fan review and discover all the amazing features and new technology this Dyson personal purifier fan offers. As you’ll see, a compact air purifier that effectively pumps out purified air directly where I need it, yet is portable enough to place on my work desk or bedside table, is indeed my dream appliance!
Dyson Pure Cool Me™ personal purifying fan Design & Features
The first thing I noticed about the new Dyson Pure Cool Me™ personal purifying fan is that it doesn’t share the iconic open frame design of Dyson’s other air purifiers.
Instead, this Dyson personal purifier uses a dome that you can manually push and pull to control the airflow. By adjusting the dome’s position, you can angle the flow higher or lower – a very unique way to manually control the airflow, that I found particularly enjoyable (and satisfying) to use.
To get the ideal position, I moved the air purifier from the left end of my desk to the right a few times until I decided that I preferred having it on the left. As you can see in the images above, the head of this Dyson desk purifier is a lot smaller than on previous Dyson desk fan models, making it extremely compact and portable – so, moving it from one end of my desk to the other was a breeze!
I tested out the White/Silver model, but the Dyson Pure Cool Me™ personal purifying fan is also available in Gunmetal/Copper. Sleek and minimalistic, both colourways will fit in well with any space and décor. Plus, the futuristic design of this fan is as iconic as any other Dyson product, with the attention to detail evident from every angle.
You can turn this Dyson personal purifier fan on and off via the power button located at the rear of the cylindrical body. Once flicked on, you can basically forget about the power button as most functions are accessible via the sleek, curved remote control (included in the box).
When not in use, you can store the remote control on the magnetic pad on the front of the cylindrical body – such a neat idea!
Below the magnetic pad is a small LCD screen that displays the different functions of the air purifier. These functions include:
- ► Fan control – lets you select one of ten different power levels
- ► Sleep timer – lets you set the timer for 30 minutes, one hour, two hours, four hours or eight
- ► Oscillation – lets you set the machine to rotate from side to side, to deliver airflow through a 70-degree range
- ► Filter status (info button on the remote) – lets you view the status of the filter
The Dyson Pure Cool Me™ personal purifying fan is just as magnificent on the inside as it is on the outside. Inside the cylindrical body is the machine’s fully-sealed filter, which combines an activated carbon and glass HEPA layer. This filter can capture gases and up to 99.95% of pollutants and allergens from the air around you.1
Removing the activated carbon and HEPA filter for replacement is very straightforward. Simply push the two buttons on either side of the fan head, and then remove the filter by pulling the two grey tabs. You don’t need to keep checking if the filter is full. Built-in reminders show you via the LCD display when your filter needs changing2.
What makes this new Dyson personal purifier special is that it houses Dyson’s latest air projection technology: Dyson Core Flow™ technology. This technology works by propelling high-velocity air jets over a convex dome. As the jets converge, a high-pressure core forms and – forced to steer around it – the air coalesces into a focused flow. This allows the fan to cool you with a stream of purified air precisely where you need it3.
Dyson Pure Cool Me™ personal purifying fan Performance
The Dyson Pure Cool Me™ personal purifying fan is surprisingly powerful and effective for such a compact unit. It’s also quiet, which I found great when working on my computer or binging on Netflix shows at my desk. At power levels one to three, this Dyson desk fan is effectively silent. The noise levels only become noticeable above five. Even then, the noise is very manageable – no whirring of mechanical bits, just the soothing white noise of the airflow.
As a fan, the Dyson Pure Cool Me™ personal purifying fan is very impressive. The Dyson Core Flow™ technology blew me away in that it gave me a precise burst of cool air in any direction I wanted – without blowing bits of paper and other small items on and around my desk (as other fans do).
As a personal air purifier, the Dyson Pure Cool Me™ personal purifying fan performed incredibly for a small unit.
This air purifier can help to alleviate the symptoms of allergies or asthma. If you have a pet dog that loves to stay in your room, like I do, using the Dyson Pure Cool Me™ personal purifying fan can also effectively get rid of odours. As mentioned earlier, this air purifier is equipped with an Activated Carbon filter, an air filter that is highly effective with absorbing smells produced by pets.
