    Your Baby Cot FAQs

What’s the difference between a cot and a cot bed?

A baby cot, also called a compact cot, is smaller and suits nurseries with limited space. Cots are ideal from birth up until around 3 years of age, as they have less conversion options. A cot bed is the larger of the two and can convert from a bassinet to a cot and eventually to a toddler bed, making it suitable for children from birth until they are around 5 to 6 years old.

Baby Cot vs. Bassinet: Which one is best for your baby?

When deciding between a cot or bassinet for your baby, it comes down to whether you want to co-sleep, the size of your room, and how long you want to use it.

Baby cots are suitable for infants up to 2-3 years of age or when they start climbing out of their cot. Some cots even convert into toddler beds, making them a cost-effective and practical choice for parents looking for a long-term sleep solution. During the newborn stage, you can keep your baby close by with a bedside sleeper, which is a cot that can attach to your bed.

A bassinet, also known as a cradle, is designed for newborns up to about four months or when your baby is showing signs of being able to roll. Bassinets are a popular choice for parents who want their baby to sleep in the same room as them, as they take up far less space than a cot. They are also more portable, allowing you to move them from room to room as needed. Some bassinets can even attach to your bed, making those night feeds that much easier!

What should I look for when buying a cot?

A baby cot will be the centrepiece of your nursery (until the little one arrives!) so it's important to choose one that suits your space, compliments your décor, and, most importantly, is safe and comfortable for bub.

Check your cot complies with Australian safety standards, which ensures it meets strict safety criteria. Look for features like panels around the sides for adequate airflow. The right mattress and cot sheets also play a key role in your baby's safety and comfort. A cot mattress should be firm and fit the cot properly, reaching all sides with no gaps.
